While lawmakers are making every attempt to keep you and other California drivers as safe as possible on the state’s roads, you may still wonder if the legislative changes are working. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released a report detailing the changing frequency of accidents involving large trucks and what other trends have been noticed.
In general, the chance that you will be killed in an accident with a large truck has decreased dramatically over the last few decades. The number of fatal crashes recently dropped 4.5 percent from 2013 to 2014 alone. Before that, 2009 to 2013 saw a 20 percent drop. While impressive, these numbers were not the biggest decrease recorded in the report. From 2004 to 2009, the number of large truck accidents resulting in motorist fatalities plummeted 33 percent.
While your risk of being killed in a trucking accident has decreased dramatically, other negative impacts have increased in recent years. From 2013 to 2014, accidents that resulted solely in property damage jumped up 13 percent. Previously, there had been 265,000 trucks involved, but new numbers showed that the amount had increased to 346,000.
In addition to the increased involvement of large trucks in property damage only crashes, the chances that you will be injured in a crash with a large truck also went up. From 2013 to 2014, the number of trucks involved in injury crashes and the number of injury crashes that involved large trucks both increased by 21 percent.
