How to stay safe on group motorcycle riders

While some people in Van Nuys prefer getting out on their bike alone and enjoying the solitude, plenty of others know how exciting and thrilling it can be to ride with a group. However, when you throw a bunch of riders with different levels of experience together, the potential for danger increases. Therefore, there are a few preventative measures that group riders can take to make sure everyone has a fun and safe experience.

Motorcycle Cruiser Magazine recommends that everyone convene for a group meeting before the ride begins. Two experienced riders should be appointed to be the leader of the group, who rides in front, and the sweeper, who brings up the rear. Other discussions during this meeting can include the planned route, any stops and places to reconvene should the group be separated. Identifying and practicing any hand signals the group plans to use may also be beneficial.

In addition, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation points out the importance of being prepared. Riders should carry cell phones and supplies, such as tools and basic first aid equipment. If no gas stops are planned on the route, riders should be sure their tank is full before they head out.

The formation of the riders is important in terms of avoiding collisions and remaining aware of one's surroundings. Neither riding single-file nor side-by-side is recommended. Instead, the riders should stagger themselves for maximum visibility and to make sure they have enough room to manuever should an obstacle arise. Finally, it may be a good idea to keep groups on the smaller side so it will be easier to stay together and communicate.
