Why new drivers should avoid cellphones

In many ways, cellphones have made driving easier in California. You no longer have to worry about finding your way when navigation is being constantly given. You can also find the nearest convenience store, gas station or fast food restaurant in an instant. While these are just a few of the many benefits for drivers, there has been one major drawback: distraction. This is especially true for drivers who are new to the roads. We at E and E Law Group have detailed how dangerous using this technology can be for your family members who have recently received a drivers’ license.

The L.A. Times reports that researchers found that inexperienced drivers were much more likely to be involved in a crash than experienced drivers. During the observation period of several months, almost 700 crashes or near-crashes were experienced by the 151 drivers.

The chances of getting into an accident or a near-accident were 7.05 times higher when new drivers were trying to grab their phones and 8.32 times higher when they were actually dialing on their phones. Other activities, such as grabbing other objects or looking at something on the side of the road, increased the chances that novice drivers would get into an accident, but did not affect more seasoned drivers. Cellphone use increased the experienced drivers’ risk by only 2.49 times.

The risks that novice drivers show when using cellphones make it much more dangerous for inexperienced drivers to use them. For more information on this topic, please visit our web page.
