The dangers of pedestrian accidents

Car accidents in California can lead to major injuries or death for drivers and passengers, but when pedestrians are involved, the results are more likely to be fatal. Since people on foot have little to no protection, you are more likely to inflict greater damage than you sustain. We at E and E Law Group work to help you if you are involved in a pedestrian accident.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that when it comes to vehicle accidents that involve pedestrians, those on foot are 1.5 times more likely to be killed than those riding in a vehicle. On average, over 100 pedestrians are killed every day in the United States, totaling 4,735 in the year 2013 alone. Injuries are also more likely if you are not in a vehicle, as evidenced by the more than 150,000 pedestrians who visited the emergency room for treatment in that same year alone.

The chances that you will kill rather than injure a pedestrian go up with the speed of your vehicle. Visibility also plays a big factor, with the majority of deaths occurring at night.

You are also more likely to be injured or killed in a pedestrian accident if you fall into the very old or very young age groups. In 2013, 20 percent of all children under the age of 14 that were killed in car accidents were pedestrians. Almost twenty percent of all pedestrians killed were over the age of 65.
