How can I keep my teen safe on the road this summer?

With the summer holidays fast approaching, you may be wondering how you can keep your teen safe on California’s roads. Whether your child will be the driver or will be the passenger, you will want to do everything you can as a parent to be sure that he or she will be safe in any situation. Here are some great suggestions from Improv Traffic School.

First, talk with your teens about any dangerous situations they could find themselves in. Many times, you will not know if your child’s friend is likely to be drunk or on drugs, but your child will. Teach him or her to make smart decisions by rejecting rides offered by friends who may not be safe drivers. Devise a variety of scenarios to discuss what should happen in each and offer kind ways of turning down rides without damaging the friendship. The best form of protection for your child is a ready answer prepared when the situation arises.

Next, focus on one of the biggest causes of accidents: distracted driving. Your teen has likely heard how dangerous this is several times, but you may need to use statistics, websites or other visuals to impress the importance of making sure any driver, whether it is your teen or a friend, keeps both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road at all times.

In order to make this a habit, you will need to model safe driving yourself. Keep your phone out of reach while driving and show your child how to do the same. Remember that if they see you do it, they will be more likely to follow suit. This information is intended to educate and should not be taken as legal advice.
